Acne

Acne: a multifactorial skin condition with several treatment goals

Acne is not a homogeneous condition. Depending on the stage and severity, it involves excessive sebum production, follicular blockage, bacterial proliferation (Cutibacterium acnes), inflammation or its aftermath — post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and acne scars. Each of these components calls for a different technological approach.

Energy-based systems make it possible to act on several of these mechanisms — either as monotherapy or in combination with topical treatment or systemic medication.

Light therapy: LED as a non-invasive baseline treatment

LED light therapy works through photobiomodulation and can be used as monotherapy or alongside other treatments. Blue light (± 415 nm) penetrates into the epidermis and has a bactericidal effect on C. acnes. Red light (± 633 nm) stimulates circulation and promotes cell regeneration, which speeds up the healing of active lesions. Infrared light (± 830 nm) has an anti-inflammatory effect at cellular level.

The Genius® and the Healite II™ combine several light wavelengths and are suitable for maintenance treatments or as an addition to more intensive laser protocols.

IPL and laser: a targeted approach to active acne and PIH

IPL via the ReClear destroys C. acnes bacteria through photodynamic activation and reduces redness and inflammation. It is an effective choice for moderate to mild inflammatory acne with limited downtime.

The ETHEREA-MX® with IPL-SQ® applicator offers a controlled IPL treatment for active acne and diffuse redness. For post-inflammatory pigmentation following acne, picosecond systems (Picoplus on the ETHEREA-MX®) are an effective approach.

The LaseMD™ and LaseMD Ultra™ offer a combined approach through fractional 1927nm thulium laser treatment: reduced sebum production, treatment of acne scars and improvement of overall skin quality — in a single system.

A practice perspective

Acne is one of the most common reasons patients consult a skin clinic or dermatologist. A well-considered treatment offering that addresses both active acne and its aftermath (PIH, scars) allows practices to build long-term treatment relationships.

Medi-Invest helps you put together an acne programme that fits your practice profile and patient population — from entry-level LED treatments to more intensive laser protocols — with clinical support and training.
