Laser hair removal: permanent hair reduction through selective photothermolysis

Laser hair removal is based on selective photothermolysis: light energy is absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicle, thermally damaging the follicle and permanently reducing the hair. The surrounding tissue remains unaffected, provided the correct parameters are used.

The effectiveness and safety of the treatment depend strongly on the wavelength and the patient's skin tone. This makes the choice of system a clinical decision, not merely a commercial one.

Wavelengths and skin types: choosing the technology

The alexandrite laser (755 nm) is the most efficient wavelength for hair reduction in light to lighter mixed skin types (Fitzpatrick I–III). Its high affinity for melanin allows fast and effective treatments, but calls for caution in darker skin types.

The Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm) penetrates deeper into the skin and has a lower affinity for epidermal melanin, which means the system can be used safely in darker skin types (Fitzpatrick IV–VI). This is the wavelength of choice for a mixed patient profile.

Dual systems such as the Elite iQ and the Clarity II™ combine both wavelengths in a single platform. This gives practices the flexibility to treat all skin types without having to switch between systems — a relevant consideration for clinics with a diverse patient population.

Fibre lasers such as the ZYE ALX 755nm and ZYE Nd:YAG 1064nm stand out for requiring no contact gel and for their efficient cooling system, which increases treatment comfort and reduces the operational load.
