Vascular skin conditions: from diffuse redness to deeper-lying vessels

Vascular indications cover a broad spectrum of skin concerns in which blood vessels become visible at or just beneath the skin surface. From diffuse redness and rosacea to telangiectasia, couperose, angiomas, leg veins and naevi flammei — each calls for its own treatment approach and matching technology.

The shared working principle is selective photothermolysis: light energy is selectively absorbed by haemoglobin in the blood vessels, causing the vessel to coagulate and be broken down gradually by the body, without damaging the surrounding tissue.

Technology choice based on the depth and nature of the indication

Not every vascular indication responds to the same technology. The choice depends on the depth, calibre and type of blood vessel.

For superficial, diffuse indications such as general redness, early rosacea and fine telangiectasia, IPL is an effective choice. Its broad light spectrum reaches several vessels at once and lends itself to treating larger areas with limited downtime — a practical advantage for busy clinics.

For deeper-lying or more pronounced vascular structures — such as thick couperose vessels, leg veins (besenreiser), angiomas or naevi flammei — laser technologies offer a more precise and more powerful approach. The longer wavelength of Nd:YAG penetrates deeper into the skin and is also suitable for vascular treatments on darker skin types.
